‘To The Desert’

‘To The Desert’ is a collection of works based on several themes; the relationship between the figure and the void, the silence of expression and the connection a person feels for their land or home. ‘To The Desert’ concentrates on the separation and intertwining of both the void and the figure. Melding the void and the figure, until they become one, is something that has been a driving force in the latter half of working with ‘To The Desert’.
‘To The Desert’ was among other things inspired by a two month stint in the Middle East as well as a year away in Europe faced with a vastly different climate and home land.
This is a “quantum leap” from the large oil paintings which usually adorn my easel. In this current age when defining the contemporary portrait is somewhat difficult. Modern technology, video art and installation art have blurred the constraints of portraiture. Moving into future technology will help to constantly reinvent the portrait and its exact place in society. The features of a face are not essential or to define the expression or to identify the piece as portraiture, yet there is a lonely and desolate feeling which occurs when viewing a person without features or facial hair. Something in the faceless subjects holds the viewers gaze, as if the longer the piece is stared at, the more it will make sense, yet nothing happens, it is still as uncomfortable as in the beginning. Many of the figures seem to struggle for recognition and stand lonely and bereft of an identity.
A moment in time is captured, a feeling, a scent, an expression, the ephemeral.
